Puppy policies
- Your puppy must be fully funded before leaving Daystar property.
- I will not place puppies in apartment homes or homes without fenced yards.
- Dewclaws are removed and tails are docked in accordance with the AKC breed standard.
- First right of refusal: If you cannot keep your Daystar dog, you must return them to Daystar.
- Cash refunds will not be issued. A full or partial discount toward a replacement Daystar puppy may be offered at my discretion.
Advice
- Please remember your puppy is a baby. Certainly enjoy your new puppy, but remember he needs a lot of naptime and will tire easily at first.
- Dobermans are notorious blanket chewers, they love to chew up all kinds of fabrics. Sheepskin or other cloth toys might encourage this behavior. Keep your clothes and towels safely out of reach to prevent an obstruction!
- Winning a game of tug will build your puppy's confidence. Let him win, and praise him for doing so.
- I do not suggest engaging in any type of hand-to-puppy physical contact games such as wrestling, play slapping, etc. It can teach a Doberman that people are toys that can be bit.
- Please socialize your puppy. He will still protect you, and isolating him may have the opposite effect and he may end up a fear biter.
Let me coordinate your puppy's ear cropping!
I believe in cropping the Doberman ears. This is the American breed standard and I think it is the true look of the Doberman. This procedure, done correctly under general anesthesia, is mostly pain free. The puppies are more concerned with the postings and bandages than the edge discomfort. However, this is an art form and not a time for do-it-yourselfers, or inexperienced vets.
I don't crop every puppy anymore, because there are some people who do prefer natural ears and I respect that view. If you do want your puppy's ears cropped I can refer you to a proven local cropping vet: I know vets who can crop for every taste and budget. If you are an out of state family I will do my best to try to find a vet in your area. I am always available for help during the aftercare and posting phase and can help with advice on materials and techniques. |
Registration
All Daystar puppies are eligible for AKC registration and are the product of non-Z breeding. This means they do not come from, nor can they produce, albinos. All Daystar puppies are provided limited registration. If you plan to show your puppy, full registration will be negotiated by private treaty.
Health Guarantee
Your Daystar puppy is free from diseases, genetic or otherwise, to the best of my knowledge and experience. Puppies have had age appropriate vaccinations and routine wormings, and every precaution is taken to prevent exposure to diseases. Records of such are to be given with the puppy in person or mailed via USPS upon funding of the shipped puppy.
The Daystar health guarantee asserts that puppies are free of disease and any foreseeable congenital or genetic defects at the time of sale and transfer; it covers congenital defects and genetic issues for the first year of the puppy's life; and it covers hip dysplasia for the first five (5) years of the dog's life. In the event this guarantee is claimed, a replacement Daystar puppy from the next planned litter will be given at no charge.
Buyer must take the puppy to a licensed veterinarian for an exam within three (3) business days* of receiving their puppy. The exam must be a full exam at a veterinary clinic and not a roadside or parking lot "vaccination clinic". This guarantee is null and void without this exam.
Daystar has never produced dysplastic hips. Because Dobermans develop and mature at a slower rate than smaller breeds, this guarantee is void if a Daystar puppy is over-exercised, jumped excessively, or trained to compete in agility before the age of two (2) years.
* Puppies that are having an off day or seem listless or without appetite need to be seen immediately by a licensed veterinarian. Puppies can go down the tubes very quickly and without warning, time is of the essence.
